Former President Erap receives conditional pardon
Former President Joseph Ejercito Estrada is now free from the plunder verdict after the signing of the executive clemency in Malacanang last October 25, 2007. This grant was given to Estrada despite of protests of his allies who were against the pardon.
The Administration said that the government actually provides conditional pardon to prisoners of age 70. The authorities also took into consideration the six-year house arrest of the former president in the duration of court hearing at the Sandiganbayan as a penalty. Estrada’s application for pardon also states that he is not interested to run for presidency or any other position in the government in the next elections for that matter.

The executive clemency states:
"Whereas, this administration has the policy of releasing inmates who have reached the age of 70;
"Whereas, Joseph Ejercito Estrada has been under detention for six year and a half years;
"Whereas, Joseph Ejercito Estrada has publicly committed to no longer seek any elective position or office;
"In view hereof in pursuant of the authority conferred upon me by the Constitution, I hereby grant Executive clemency to Joseph Ejercito Estrada, convicted by the Sandiganbayan of plunder and imposed a penalty of reclusion perpetua. He is hereby restored to his civil and political rights."
However, the government made it clear that the acceptance of conditional pardon was limited to his freedom from being in prison and the P545-million jueteng money and other wealth resulted from his corruption including the Boracay mansion in Quezon City must be turned over as government property.
