RP observes Eidl Fitr

The Filipino Muslim Community observes the feast of Ramadhan this year on October 12, 2007. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo declared this date as a regular holiday in respect of cultural and religious significance of Eid’l Fitr in Muslim tradition.

The Eid’l Fitr (Feast of Fast-Breaking) marks the end of Ramadhan and the onset of the tenth month of Shawwal in the Hijrah or Islamic calendar. It is one of the two major Islamic holidays (Eid). The other is the Eid’l Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice) which commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismael at the command of Allah.

Filipino Muslims observe Eidl Fitr at the end of Ramadhan

Ramadhan is the time for Muslims to truly reflect on the virtues instilled in by the sacrifices. Devout Muslims in the Philippines, mostly concentrated in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao or ARMM, are expected to throng to the ARMM compound for the early morning communal prayer observed by Muslims during Eidl Fitr.

The road to Eid'l Fitr started in Muslim communities as early as Thursday night, when Islamic faithful observed the Takbiran. In the Takbiran, groups of scholars went around communities and recited the Takbir or the call to prayer.

Elsewhere in the country, Muslims gathered in their communities for prayers, and later shared food with families, relatives and neighbors' as part of the Eid'l-Fitr celebrations.
