What happened to the north railway project?
Aside from large barricades and fences, the dreamed railway project site in Malolos City, Bulacan has no possible and clear improvements after the relocation phase of the railway residents poured into something else. A view of vacant lots ventured the town from Malolos Crossing to the Guiguinto-Malolos boundary. The government said they started the construction phase last February 2007, but after six months, only those big yellow metal fences were put up.
The North Luzon Railway Project is visualized to bring about a modern rail system that runs from Caloocan in Metro Manila to Clark, Pampanga. The first phase of the railway will be from Caloocan to Malolos and apparently will cost US$500 million or about PhP25 billion. This phase is expected to be completed this year but despite of its overwhelming dream, not even half has been completed. The first phase of the project is expected to be finished by 2010, and the second phase will start after a year.
Although the railway project appears to have stopped, the demolition of the shanties of the former railway residents who live along the railway lines goes on. The government has spent a billion pesos to transfer these families. A promise of decent living is far from reality. Complaints have boomed over water shortage, power outage and job shrinkage in the relocation areas.
With these situations, the railway project president promised that the full blast construction of the 80.2-kilometer rail line from old Tutuban Station of Philippine National Railways to Malolos will definitely start in January 2008. Also, all the remaining squatters residing along the old train line to be revived shall be transferred already in their new residences by December 2007. But, the promise of decent living is not anymore mentioned.
