Hady Mirza is the first Asian Idol
Hady Mirza of Singapore bested five other Idols from India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines in the recently concluded Asian Idol held on December 16, 2007 at the Jakarta International Expo in Indonesia, and broadcasted live to different countries.
Each of the Asian Idol finalists were given a chance to perform two songs in the Performance Night on December 15, one song in their native language and an English song. The other finalists were Jaclyn Victor (Malaysia), Phuong Vy (Vietnam), Abhijeet Sawant (India), Mike Mohede (Indonesia), and Mau Marcelo (Philippines). Hady sang Beautiful Day by U2 and Berserah by Taufik Batisah.
The six judges were composed of the Idol juries from different countries. Evaluated their performances were Anu Malik (Indian Idol’s judge), Siu Black (Vietnam Idol’s judge), Indra Lesmana (Indonesian Idol’s judge), Paul Moss (Malaysian Idol’s judge), Ken Lim (Singapore Idol’s judge), and Pilita Corrales (Philippine Idol’s judge). Well, all of them were not as harsh as Simon Fuller (the creator of American Idol).
The winner, which is determined by viewers' votes all over the region, received cash prizes and a chance to be famous among others.
