Dawn Mass officially starts Christmas season

Filipino families started their tradition of waking up early for nine consecutive days before Christmas day as the annual Dawn Mass officially begins today. All Catholic churches nationwide celebrated masses as early as 4am following the tradition called "Simbang Gabi."

Although the Philippines feels the Christmas as early as September, technically the nine dawn masses officially signals the coming of Christmas day wherein families go to church and reflect in preparation for the season. The dawn masses starts December 16 and ends December 24 prior to a grand celebration of the mass in December 25.

The Philippines is the only Asian country where Christians predominate. Majority of its people are Roman Catholic. Christmas, therefore, is an extremely important and revered holiday for most Filipinos. It is a time for family, for sharing, for giving, and a time for food, fun, and friendship.

The long celebration of Christmas for the Filipinos continues until the first Sunday of January, Feast of the Three Kings, that signals the official end of the season.
