Jeepney Strike fails to paralyze transportation

The jeepney drivers' hope of paralyzing the transportation in Manila and nearby provinces failed to materialize yesterday December 13, 2007. Of the several groups and associations of jeepney drivers and operators in the Philippines, only PISTON (Pinagkaisang Samahan ng Tsuper at Operators Nationwide) attempted to boost their cry to the government regarding issues affecting drivers and operators.

The said strike attempted to paralyze the transportation in Manila, Rizal, Bulacan, Cavite and Laguna. Some commuters were stranded on their way to schools and offices but generally, the public were able to utilize other transportation means such as taxi, bus and trains.

Meanwhile, the Metro Manila Development Authority in cooperation with the Philippine National Police provided 10 buses to affected commuters.

The jeepney drivers were still fighting for the regulation of oil price increases and requests for another fare hike to sustain the needs of increasing financial difficulties.
