Manila Mayor helps Quiapo tragedy victims

Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim facilitated the extension of assistance to the families of the Black Nazarene devotees who died during the traditional procession last January 9, 2007. Lim condoled with the families of Cecilia Fajardo and Alex Radovan and lamented that the number of policemen deployed to maintain orderliness had no match to the number of devotees who joined the celebration.

According to the authorities, this year's Quiapo fiesta registered the highest number of participants at 2.6 million. This tradition is running for more than 400 years after the Spaniards brought the Black Nazarene statue in the 18th century. Devotees believe that miracles will be true upon wiping a white handkerchief to the miraculous statue. This year's procession was almost eight hours.
